HIGHWAY 4: CLASSIC ROCK 21ST CENTURY MUSCLE
Highway 4 is a rock band out of Western Pennsylvania quickly rising to popularity. Eclectic personal favorites of the 70's music era have been the backbone to developing the unique but reminiscent classic sound.
Armed with the music from their full-length album, Up In Arms(6/21/14), and the music of their influences, Highway 4 possesses a professional quality and unmatchable energy. Their youthful, wild passion and raw talent are the unmistakeable components of every performance from this rising band.

"We're losing the human element in today's music. Perfection is impossible, and no one really wants that anyway." -Kelly Brown, Lead singer of Highway 4

In February 2012, they competed in The X Winter Rock Showcase & placed 2nd Overall out of over 110 Bands. Then, in early March, they took 1st Place in the Next Big Thing Tour at Mr. Small's Theatre out of over 40 bands. In July 2013, they won a Grassy Award from 97.7 The Rock Station for their song "One Of These Days." They've shared the stage with musicians including The Clarks, Zepparella, Truth & Salvage Co., Blackberry Smoke, Jack Russell's Great White and Hot Action Cop. Production of their demo, "Rock N Roll Lives" wrapped in late July 2012, and full-length album, Up In Arms, was released June 21, 2014.

Each of the members were raised on, and still thrive on, what can only be classified as "classic rock." Favorites include: Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, AC/DC and,(newer artists)The Foo Fighters.

Silk9 is a Pittsburgh PA based hard rock band that was founded in April of 2013 by Anthony
Leone and Jamie Rohr.
The" vision" of Silk9 was to "embrace" the essence of the 90’s and add an original spin
on today’s hard rock genre.
In May of 2014 the band released its first EP entitled “Exit the Pain.” Songs from the EP have
been featured on 97.7 fm located in Butler PA, Adrenaline 101 internet radio, 105.9 fm the X, in
Pittsburgh PA., 102.5 WDVE in Pittsburgh PA, ThePAROCKSHOW.COM, The EAgle 107.5 and recently featured on Lou Lombardi's, Rock n' Roll Circus.
We strive to keep our standards high by working with some of the top local bands in the area and national acts such as Lynch Mob,
Adelitas Way, The Art of Dying, Hillbilly Herald, Drowning Pool, Crobot,Skid Row and on most recently Jake E Lee's Red Dragon's Cartel

Nightly Standard was founded in 2011 by singer/songwriter/guitarist Seth Dubin and provocateur/classical trumpeter Rocco Pacella. The two performed together as founding members of the once-venerable Pittsburgh-based group The Metropolitans, which stopped performing in 2009. An evolution in songwriting, line-up and musical approach occurred over the next few years, culminating in Nightly Standard’s formation.

Seth and Rocco’s pressing priority was gathering the right musicians for the horn section – one musician immediately came to mind. A close friend and former member of The Metropolitans, Jason Munley navigates the intricate pathways and pitfalls of the alto saxophone with the blatant carelessness of a jazz mastermind. His contribution of musical theory to Nightly Standard was eventually matched by the likes of Joshua George, a laconic, skilled and stalwart embodiment of all that a classically trained tenor/baritone saxophonist should be.

The need for a rhythm section was clear… after the horn section was contained. It was important for Seth to capture elements of rock, soul and pop that he had so often tried to mimic in his songwriting, but he also wanted a rhythm section whose sound could easily imbue certain features of standard jazz. The choice was obvious once David Fix auditioned in the brick-lined expanse of Nightly Standard's practice loft. Dave’s experience as a student at Berklee College of Music and in countless bands provided him with the repertoire of a seemingly endless variety of genres and bass-like tonalities. Alas! The group found themselves in need of a percussive foundation. Mike Smales was rescued while playing a tattered drumset in the backroom of a dilapidated laboratory marked "Special Projects" in Pittsburgh's Dilapidated Laboratory neighborhood. His origins are not completely known, but with an almost robotic precision, his mechanical "love" of all genres allows him to lock-in with all of Nightly Standard's musical elements. Last, but certainly not least, was the need for a strong, soulful female lead. After a gauntlet-like audition process, vocalist Laura Fredrickson emerged as Nightly Standard's frontwoman. With years of experience singing in numerous groups, Laura possesses a natural voice to match her unique style, and, of course, has a background playing the tuba.

Once Nightly Standard’s line-up was set, the outfit decided to embark upon a rather rigorous practice and performance schedule, compiling a variety of both original and cover songs in the process. Since 2011, Nightly Standard has continuously played at venues such as Club Cafe, The Thunderbird Cafe, Howler's Coyote Cafe, Hambone's Pub and even at local weddings, restaurants and public events. And there it is – Nightly Standard's story.

Exuding a smoky undertone, sassy delivery, and catchy melodies, Singer-Songstress Rachel B is paving her way as an undefinable and timeless Entertainer. In 2014 she self-released her debut EP, “I’m The Boss” and headlined a 10 city national tour. In 2015 she independently released her second EP titled, "Break It Down." Whether she's singing about being Vicious, a Boss, or in La La Love, this sassy treat is sure to leave you with memorable hooks that empower and inspire.

Captivating audiences from an early age, Rachel's ability to inspire and connect with her fans has always come naturely, this up and coming starlete will reel you in and leave you wanting more. After studying Classical Voice at Interlochen Arts Academy, Rachel fell in love with songwriting and various genres of music from Motown to new and classic Pop. She then attended Berklee College of Music in Boston and moved to Los Angeles three years later. In Los Angeles she honed her artistry by performing on stages all around Southern California, in addition to writing music for film and television. She has had songs placed on ABC'S General Hospital and played at venues across the country such as Chicago Symphony Hall, Berklee Performance Center, and Traverse City Wine Festival. Rachel recently relocated to Pittsburgh where she is building her career as an independent artist and spreading her passion and sass by making stages all over the country her home.

“Her set was brimming with sass, playful energy, and unquestionable talent. One moment she was giggling about ripping pantyhose and teasing her guitar player, and the next belting out originals “I’m the Boss” and “Vicious.” I’m all about lady-power, so needless to say I was into the equally flirty and ferocious set." -Carnegie Mellon’s The Cut Magazine.

"If ever there was a time for females to finally, rightfully, and deservedly burst out of the shadows of others and prove they are just as powerful as anybody, it is today’s movement. Singer-songwriter Rachel B is not inching into the spotlight–she is lighting her own stage. Out of respect for this empowering songstress, she will not be classified."

Blues News and Reviews:
"One of the stellar tracks on "Bottle Full of Blues," is titled "Wash My Blues Away." It's an emotional, soul-baring, gospel-informed slice of soulful blues." Dave Richards ~Erie Showcase Magazine.  'If there's anything to be said about the nitty gritty sounds of Jeff Fetterman it is that he can actually play a guitar...with it's Stevie Ray Vaughan meets Eric Clapton influenced sounds, Jeff Fetterman's honesty and heart prevail through his music proving he's an ordinary man with a passion for rock and roll.'
~Byron Nash, Pittsburgh's Rock-n-roll reporter
'Long Hard Road features bluesy harmonica, gritty vocals, and surprisingly soulful back up female vocals...The songwriting is perfunctory at times, they go where you expect. He puts a lot of Springsteen styled heart into charging tunes like Hellbound Train, Ride With the Wind, and sparkling Real Love... It's Honest stuff.'
~Dave Richards, Showcase Magazine, Erie PA.

EPISODE 26 - WHO THE HECK IS JIMI HENDRIX?

Why is Jimi still so important and what we can learn from him for our own careers. Music from The Brazilian Johnsons, Fire Wolfe, Fantasm and We Came From Space. Birthday shout outs to Sharon Jones, Jackie Jackson, Nick Ashford, Randy Travis, Anders Osborne, and Gregg Alexander of The New Radicals

Here’s a new band alerted to us a few weeks ago from GDAZE regular RKBLUEZ.  They are the 80′s sounding metal outfit called Firewolfe.  Unlike the 80′s however, this band are borne on the strands of the fibre-optic highway, a five-piece collective who have used the tools of the Internet and their own respective home studios across the length and breadth of the USA to aggregate a collection of songs which is pure traditional sounding 80′s metal in the vein of Savatage, Armored Saint, Metal Church, Vicious Rumors and the like.  Formed by guitarists-in-league Paul Kleff and Nick Layton, the duo realised they had more in common than first appeared, and so began a process of collaboration in 2010 that bore fruit after joint songwriting efforts.  The exchange of musical ideas cemented to the point of progressing to a full band situation with other players.  Next onboard came singer Dave Fefolt, a singer who has credits with Masi, Angels Of Babylon and Rhino, and whose voice was the perfect instrument to carry the Firewolfe songs.  Jay Schellen (Hurricane, Unruly Child etc) provides the drums while session bassist Zack Uidl rounds out the band. To give you an idea as to how ‘inter-continental’ Firewolfe are, Kleff lives in Michigan, Layton in Vancouver, Fefolt in Phoenix, Schellen is from Los Angeles while Uidl resides in Chicago.  The transfer of large music files across the Net is the way of the music industry these days, though it does make band practice a lot tougher now.. lol!  However, I wonder how soon we’ll be able to see musicians ‘jam’ with each other live across the Internet?  If I’m thinking of it now, guaranteed it will happen within my lifetime.

The Brazilian Johnsons are a "Energetic, Blues-infused, New Old-School Rock" band based out of Brooklyn, NY.

Comprised of members Michel Nasrallah (lead singer and guitarist), Apoena Frota (bass and vocals), JoĂŁo Nogueira (keys and vocals), AndrĂ© Vasconcelos (guitar and vocals) and Bruno Esrubilsky (drums) – The Brazilian Johnsons formed with the goal of making music “that got us started playing our instruments in the first place.”

“We all met at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA.  The fact that we're all Brazilian is a coincidence, well, obviously I got a band together with some of the baddest musicians I know, but being in a band with good friends is something else entirely.” – Michel Nasrallah

Their debut EP, entitled "Howdy Duty" has just been released on Dec. 6 and is available everywhere, including iTunes and CD Baby.  You can find links to purchase it here on the website as well.

We Came From Space is a small collective of super hero types. We Came From Space is flesh and blood guys that do what they can to bring a little light, heat, and volume to a sometimes dark, chilly, and silent world.

Now, we here at WCFS are aware that the concept of a ‘regular’ super hero is novel and does not fit into most people’s conveniently standard way of thinking. Relax; there is no wearing of capes or leaping of tall buildings with us (but one of those underground lairs would really kick ass). We will leave that to the ‘Super’ super heroes (maybe that’s you!) that wear capes and leap tall buildings (and have totally cool underground lairs).

We Came From Space uses loud rock and roll to generate righteous vibes and good time grooves! We are free thinkers in life and stand shoulder to shoulder in the certainty that MUSIC STILL MATTERS. It’s true! Someone’s just written it.

We Came From Space doesn’t fly the flag of any particular musical genre (although the set list is REALLY light on country-opera) and are proud of the poppy, proggy, punky, rocky, songs we’ve written. Life has taught us that limitations are nothing if not ummm…. limiting. So, to that end, WCFS defies easy musical classification. If it rocks, it’s right. Nobody puts We Came From Space in a corner!! Each member contributes to the writing, arranging, and overall rocket sauce that keeps the heat on here at WCFS

The Dan Bubien Music Company encompasses all aspects of Dan's music career including but not limited to writing, publishing, recording, booking and providing entertainment. The Dan Bubien Music Company was established in September 2013.

Dan Bubien is a singer/songwriter/guitarist from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. Music was always a part of Dan’s life growing up even before his passion was realized. His father was a lifelong working musician. As a kid, Dan and his brother spent their time goofing off and running around at their dad’s shows and used to tease him for singing off-key. It wasn’t until a teenage injury sidelined his athletics that Dan picked up one of his Dad’s guitars and taught himself to play. With that, came a new appreciation for music and a realization of what his Dad did. What was once thought to be off-key was actually in perfect harmony.

Dan’s professional musical journey started nearly 20 years ago by fronting and playing with several local bands and musicians. It wasn’t until 2004 that Dan felt he had a clear sense of where he was as an artist and song writer and started the band that would carry him through the next decade. Dan always had an appreciation for blues, soul and funk music, but it was a popular reggae band that inspired the signature sound of The Sun Kings. Their unique flavor and approach to music was something new to the local scene and garnered them a significant following. That reputation has established Dan as a fixture and has allowed him to branch out on his own and come back to his roots by exploring new and ever evolving influences. It wasn’t one moment or one thing that brought Dan to where he is today; but an important blend of every person, every song and every experience along the way.

Dan recently wrapped a year long stretch of recording with four-time Grammy Award Winning Producer/Engineer Jay Dudt at Audible Images Studio in Pittsburgh.

“This is the best collection of music and the best work I’ve done as a producer in years” said Dudt.

The new album, Empty Roads, is a collection of original music co-written with talented writer and friend, Roman Marocco and features the best of the best in Pittsburgh’s music scene.

“Eric DeFade, Pittsburgh’s premier saxophone player and Ralph Guzzi, well known horn arranger are on the album” says Bubien, “I also have Chris Nacy of “Izzy and Chris” fame playing harmonica on a few tracks.”

Backed by bass player Gary Ripper, drummer Andy Taravella and Timmy Mabin on keys the album is a solid mix of funk, blues and old school soul.

“There are two sides to this album,” Bubien explains. “There is the gritty blues sound that I Iike to call Louisiana Swamp and then it goes to the opposite end of the spectrum with smooth soul sounds rounded out by harmonies from Jimmie Ross (The Jaggerz), Morgan Maybray and Andre Marocco.”

Joe Monroe, Jonathan Vallecorsa and Stan Kleja are also a part of the All Star line-up contributing to the end result of Empty Roads.

“I feel very blessed to have all of these guys on my album. I knew how I wanted it to sound and they really helped bring it to life” said Bubien. “The songs themselves are traditional but I feel we were successful in making them sound fresh and new. We really did cover a wide spectrum of music and arranged the songs in a way that is something Pittsburgh hasn’t heard in some time.”

Empty Roads dropped on Friday, September 13, 2013 to a SOLD OUT crowd at Club Cafe in the South Side. The release event was preceded by airplay on WDVE’s Homegrown Show and was followed by extensive play on WYEP’s Soul Show, Big Town Blues and Rollin’ and Tumblin’. 93.3 The Wolf Youngstown also played the single “To Youngstown” on their Tangled Up in Blues radio program the weekend of its release. That is the same track that was used to promote the album with a music video directed by Pittsburgh native, Joshua Franzos. The video is on its way to going viral with over 8,000 views around the world.

Empty Roads continues to be well received by the Blues Community and is gaining traction on the air waves. Various tracks from the album are being played nationally as well as internationally in cities such as Melbourne, Australia and Paris, France. The album has charted as high as #14 on the PA Roots Charts and #41 on the Worldwide Blues Charts. The album was chosen to represent at the IBC’s in 2013 by the Blues Society of Western PA as best Self-Produced CD. The album was also chosen as top 5 albums of 2013 in WYEP’s Year in Review by host and DJ of Rollin and Tumblin Rob O’Friel.

In addition to Dan opening for the likes of Anthony Gomes, John Browns Body and 311, Dan has shared the same stage with Anna Popovich, Magic Slim, Bernard Allison, Tinsley Ellis, Shemekia Copeland, Debbie Davies, Guitar Shorty and Michael Burks. The members of his band have performed at numerous festivals and have opened for or shared the stage with Koko Taylor, James Cotton, Jimmie Vaughan, Hubert Sumlin, G.E. Smith Band, Tab Benoit, Savoy Brown, Blind Boys of Alabama, Eric Lindell, Carl Weathersby, Tommy Castro, Coco Montoya, The Sean Carney Band, Otis Taylor, Sean Costello, Michael Hills Blues Mob and Kansas.

Dan and the boys are booked and lined up to play the 2014 Three Rivers Regatta in Pittsburgh, PA, Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival in Gahanna, OH as well as several other festivals in 2014.

Read below about the creative process that informed the album, challenges he faced while working on it, gear and more. These are basically song ideas I’ve had kicking around for quite a few years now, and they are finally seeing the light of day. Three of the songs will be credited to my  producer and friend,Hodge GjonbalajThe entirety of the material was recorded at Hodge’s home studio and on his equipment, with the exception of my guitar. I am influenced by a lot of eastern music. A “nazar” serves as both a cultural and superstitious symbol. The blue eye is an amulet used throughout the Middle East, Turkey, Balkans, and parts of Eastern Europe. Often you might see one hanging in a place of business or put near a newborn. It’s function serves to ward off the “evil” or “jealous” eye of others. It seemed fitting.I’m really into a wide range of things, that really run the gamut of guitar based stuff to eastern music to goa trance and IDM. For starters, there is a Jean Michel Jarre cover appearing,Oxygene4. If you had to ask me who my three favorite guitar players are, they would probably beJohn McLaughlinShawn Lane, and Allan Holdsworth. I like a lot of Squarepusher. I loveSimon Posford (Shpongle, Younger Brother, Hallucinogen) and Ozric Tentacles. Each track might be drawing from a few different sources.
